Year 1 Archive: 15/09/09 Extreme Tri Whether we were talked in to it or not, EXTREME it certainly was? There was
2ft surf as we lined up for the swim. ‘Those south coast Gylly guards’
were looking forward to the surf at Teignmouth, yes Teignmouth. Dave was
1st out of the swim with no surprise, as he is an awesome competitor and
Gylly is proud to have him as part of the crew! Allan 3rd and Matt 6th.
09/09/09 A Well Overdue Update I'm really sorry for the delay in updating the site. I have been having a few computer probs. Everything seems to be o.k for now though… Half Ironman, Very Extreme 09.09.09 Allan Reid, Dave Bartlett and Matthew Stone are representing Gylly this weekend in the Accelerate Extreme Triathlon in Teignmough, South Devon. A race that is longer than a Half Ironman and comprises of a 2km swim, 90km cycle and 15mile off road run is a toughy to say the least. A 'race to finish' for most, especially with the 20% gradients to be negotiated. Good luck, I'm sure we'll need it! Cornish Team Selection 29.08.09 Our Junior Coach, Melissa Reid, has been selected to represent Cornwall in National Surf Life Saving competitions. She recently competed in the Celtic Cup against the likes of Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Devon. She helped the Cornish team place an excellent 2nd. Well done Missy! (I promised not to include a photo!) Nationals At Gylly 14.08.09
What an amazing weekend it was! Well done to everyone who competed, supported, marshaled and helped out with the National Surf Life Saving Champs at Gyllyngvase Beach. We had some excellent results, especially from those completely new to the sport. The main thing is everyone was having fun, and that's what it is all about. What I noticed from the weekend more than anything else was the team togetherness that you all showed. Awesome job! The official results will be posted here when I have them. County Coach 01.08.09
The club can be proud to announce that chairman Allan Reid, has been selected to be Cornwall's County Swimming Coach. We can all learn from his increasing expertise in the sport during our pool training this winter.ms
Wednesday Evening Training As well as the Open Water Swim, the club is introducing another nipper training session at 6pm throughout the summer holidays. Chris King, who has recently joined Gylly SLSC will be coaching the session. If you would like to join in, or help coach, come down to the beach for 6. Committee Re-shuffle I would like to inform all members of a committee re-shuffle, coming out of last Thursday's committee meeting. The positions are:
These positions reflect how the club's junior section has increased in size, and people's commitments have changed. Clubmark Club President, Matthew Stone, has been meeting with an area support manager from the Cornwall Sports Partnership, with an intention to get Gyllyngvase SLSC Clubmark certified. Clubmark is 'the Sport England mark of high quality for junior clubs', making sure clubs apply to standards such as club management, equity and ethics as well as the duty of care of its junior members. Although it will take a lot of time and work to be achieved, Gylly will be one of the first Surf Life Saving Clubs in the UK to gain the accreditation. Visit clubmark.org.uk for more info. Race Results The club has recently had competitors enter the St. Ives Biathlon, Mylor Triathlon and the Summer Turkey Trott, 4 Mile Race. Click on the links above to view the results. When I get a spare min, I'll add then to the results section. Well done to all those that entered!ms
3 members of Gylly SLSC took part in the first ever mini-junior triathlon at Falmouth's Swanpool Beach on Saturday. Competitors in three age groups completed three events – a run, a swim and a sprint kayak. This was followed by a dash up the beach to the finish line. The event was organized by Elemental Uk and it is hoped that it will become an annual event. The winners were: Rosy Holliday (under-10 girls), Charlotte Emsden (under-12 girls) and Izella Holliday (under-14 girls). Well done to everyone who took part in the event!ms 12/06/09 Helston Triathlon
Last Sunday the club saw even more success, with a 1st place coming from the Helston Triathlon. At Helston, our team of Courtney-Lee Reid, Tom James and Felix Coates (above) thrashed the opposition to win the team relay event. Gylly had 5 triathletes entered in the individual catergory. Dave Bartlett had the best result finishing 5th overall. Emily was the 1st lady home for Gylly, crossing the line in 8th place. Head to the gallery and results pages for more info. 07/06/09 An Overdue Update Sorry about the delay in updating the site everyone! I've been in the process of moving house with no access to the internet. Below is a brief update of what's been happening recently: NaRS Course A Big Success 30.05.09 In the final week of May, club chairman Allan Reid coordinated a NaRS Beach Lifeguard course in conjunction with the RNLI and Falmouth Marine College. 10 students of the college, who are now all members of Gylly SLSC, passed the exam on Saturday. It is good news for the club as Allan is now a qualified NaRS Instructor. Nice one Al! Castle To Castle Swim 30.05.09
Hugh Emsden and Lois Leanard joined 38 other swimmers to cross the River Fal from Pendennis Head to St Mawes to raise money for the RNLI charity’s new South West Lifeguard Appeal. The 1 Mile race was organized by the RNLI and was supported by the club with 6 Members on Rescue Boards. Marazion Middle Distance 30.05.09
Dave Bartlett took part in the Half Ironman on the 30th June. He stormed to the lead in the swim (which is his strongest event), coming out of the water 8 minutes ahead of the field. He set out on the bike at a speedy pace which he found hard to maintain. As it was only a training event this didn't deter him, and he'll be back next time. Saltash Aquathlon 30.05.09 On her second outing in multi discipline racing, Nikki Russell broke the Female Youth swim record with a fantastic time of 07:07 and a combined time of 35:07. She came second overall in her age category. Well done Nikki! Cubert 5 02.06.09
On a very hot and sunny Tuesday evening 11 adults and 2 juniors ventured to Cubert near Holywell Bay to take place in the 5 mile run and 1 mile fun run. It was one of the clubs biggest race turn outs (not bad for a tri club!). We had some strong runs to be proud of, with a few trophies to take home as well. We also had 3 runners competing for Gylly for the first time. Notably Emily Trebilcock won the Under 35 category with a great time of 32:31. The female team also had a 6th place result too. Our fastest finisher was Matthew Stone with a sub 30 minute run (29:05). Alice and Charlotte Emsden also had a super run in the kids 1 mile fun run, even with a stumble at the start. Full Gylly results here.
Gylly SLSC saw its second victory in the space of 2 weeks, when Dave Bartlett (above center) won the Penzance Jubilee Pool Aquathlon last Saturday! He crossed the line with a total time of 13:36, that included an impressive 2:12mins 200m swim and the second fastest run split of the day. Kyle Kearey (above left) of Mounts Bay Harriers, 13:57 and David Pell (above right) of Cornwall AC, 14:22 were second and third. Allan Reid also had a strong race, finishing 5th overall with a combined time of 14:35. Melissa Reid, 17:31 and Nikki Russell, 17:32 had a close fought race with only 1 second separating them, finishing 6th and 7th in the female race. An excellent result for Nikki, who is just starting out in the multi discipline sport. Overall a superb day for Gylly, which also saw the start of the Summer Training Program on the beach. Emily Trebilcock stormed to victory as the first woman home last saturday, at the Gylly Beach Biathlon. An event organized by a student of the Marine College, consisting of a 400m sea swim and a 5km run round Pendennis Castle. Em came out of the water in 7th place (3rd woman) but flew through the field with a 'speedy' (as her competitors called it) run round the point. She completed the race in a time of 31:09:81, finishing 3rd overall, only a couple of minutes behind the first place male. The slightly steep entry fee meant that the start list wasn't as big as it could have been, and this is something that the organizers will take on board if the event comes back next year. A final thank you to Sam Steele, who helped Matt and Allan to co-ordinate the water cover for the event. We didn't even get a Weever!ms back

Club members Michelle and Allan Reid represented Gylly at today's Flora London Marathon. A very hot and sunny day brought in the crowds to watch over 35,000 runners start the race. There was an amazing atmosphere throughout the course, and this inspired Allan to run his second sub 3 hour marathon, despite the sweltering heat. Running in her first marathon, Michelle was just happy to complete the course (she forgot to stop her watch). I was lucky enough to be at the Cutty Sark (7 miles) to see the elite men sprinting by and then it was a mad rush to get to the finish where all of the runners were enthusiastically cheered home. It will be Allan's last marathon (apparently); for everyone else, bring on the Cornish! ms 13/04/09 Emily's Tri
Photo by John Prody Congratulations to Emily, who was Gylly's sole representative at the Penzance Triathlon on Easter Sunday. In beautiful conditions, she started off with a fantastic swim, coming out of the pool in 06:50. After a steady bike leg and the fastest female run split (by almost 2 minutes) she came an excellent 2nd in her Under 30 category! She was supported on the day my Allan, Matt and Dave, who along with Emily and a few others, are in training for the Helston Tri. Well Done Emily! ms
Hi all! What an action packed weekend it has been at Gylly! To start with, I'd like to say a big thank you to all those who attended the Bag Packing event at Sainsbury's in Truro. We raised over £360 on the day, and this will go towards much needed rescue equipment. Sorry I (Matt) could only stay for an hour, but it was good to see you all training hard in the pool afterwards. Cheers to Sainsbury's as well for allowing us to raise the funds. This Sunday saw the very first Trevornick Trot - a multi-terrain course of about 10 miles - and the newest addition to the Cornish Grand Prix circuit. Matthew Stone, Allan Reid and Emily Trebilcock of Gylly SLSC traveled to Holywell Bay, near Newquay, and were met with glorious sunshine. It was an incredibly challenging course, with steep descents and ascents throughout and the magnificent scenery helped everyone get to the finish line! See the results here >>> Meanwhile Tom, Will and Sam took the very busy Beach session, where a lot of new faces were to be seen. Later on at 3pm, the horn sounded the start of the 2009 Penryn Run Run. There were 7 runners representing Gylly in 3 different age groups. The main fun run (5k race) saw a very close and fast paced race, where Felix Coates came a very respectable 2nd, with Matthew Stone 3rd and Allan reid 5th. In the Junior 2K race Nikki Russel stormed to victory, and Courtney-Lee Reid crossed the line in 4th. Gylly saw more medals in the children's race, where Charlotte Emsden finished an excellent 2nd and the day has to go to Super Eddie Emsden, who completed the course (in Crocs!) finishing 1st in his age category! ms 26/03/09 Our Money Your Dream
The club is delighted to reveal that we have received a grant from the 'Our Money Your Dream' fund. It is for the sum of £7.925.00, and is to be spent on various rescue, training and resuscitation equipment for the children of Gylly SLSC (Gylly Kids). Many thanks to Club captain Tom James, who applied for and secured the grant. You will all see new equipment appearing soon, and we will be able to return the surfboards kindly donated to us from Falmouth Surf School. However, due to the return of the lifeguard service to the beach, we will need to find a new location for storage. We have a few ideas, but if you know anywhere yourselves, please get in touch with Allan or Tom. ms
The Gylly Kids website how now been launched (although it is still in construction). It is aimed at members 16 and under, and will include all relevant information, news and fun stuff for the kids of Gylly SLSC. It's main aim is to allow children to get more involved in the running of the club, and have a say on club goings on. There will also be various races for children posted in the events page. Click on the image above or on the left of this page to enter the site.
Melissa Reid, Tom James, Will Parkinson, Milly Trevail, Rosie Pond, Bethany Pond, Courtney-Lee Reid and Jack Trevail were the 8 nippers and juniors representing Gylly SLSC at the National Still Water Surf Life Saving Championships. It was based at Millfield school on 7th and 8th of February, and we all just about managed to make it there driving through the snow!
The results have just been released and I can announce that we had an excellent achievement of 2 Silvers and 8 Bronzes! The Junior team also came a fantastic 11th in the country, only 3 points behind Polzeath. The highlight of the day was the Girls Under 16 Obstacle Relay (swimming under the gates), where we finished 3rd, narrowly behind Saunton Sands. It was a day of mixed emotions, with some great races and also some unfortunate disqualifications. Most importantly, everyone involved gained valuable experience, so we can win even more medals next year! Head to the results and gallery pages for more info on the day. Thanks to all competitors, coaches and parents for representing the club, and thanks to SLS GB for a well organized event.
Well what
can I say…
Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving Club entered our first race as a team today, in the Falmouth Mob Match. Conveniently starting at Gylly Beach, it was a great opportunity for the club to race with some local support. The team consisted of Dave Bartlett, Simon Bayliss, Felix Coates, Matthew Stone, Mark Lawarne, Todd Whymark, Harry Stott, Nick Winchester, Tom James, Hugh Emsden, Melissa Reid and new recruits Alison Stephens and Rachel Sturtridge.
Gylly SLSC had excellent individual and team results. The entire team came 15th overall, with our top finisher Dave Bartlett in 24th place. Our big success came in the Men's Under 40 category, where the top 4 finishers scored points. We came an excellent 5th out of 15 teams, just behind St. Austell RC and ahead of Tamar Trotters! As well as Dave running a fast time, Simon and Felix helped to secure this place with Matthew being the 4th fastest finisher. Visit the gallery to see the pics of the day and you can view the full times and places in the results section of this site.
Gylly SLSC was represented by 1 competitor last sunday in the 26.2 mile Cornish Marathon. Matthew Stone completed the race with an unofficial time of 3:33:05, placing him in the top 50. It was Matthew's first marathon, and he is determined to better his time next year. Club chairman, Allan Reid also completed the race, competing for Hayle Runners.
The race started and finished at Pensilver, nr Bodmin, and took the runners through a grueling but beautiful course in the East Cornish Countryside. It is known as one of the countries toughest marathons, with a number of steep hills to negotiate. In total 212 people completed the race, which is a massive achievement in itself. Thank you to club members Michelle, Melissa and Courtney-Lee Reid who supported the club runners, and took the pics on the day. We hope to see you all there next year!
The club had its first club morning today. At 10am we began what is to be the first of many beach training sessions; where members can learn new skills in surf life saving techniques. It was a low key affair, but there was excellent feedback all round. Big thanks to everyone who attended, both coaching and budding members.
The race was very quickly won by Dave Bartlett of Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving Cllub in the open division. In the under 16 division Courtney-Lee Reid (again from gylly slsc) stormed home in first place. You can find the placings on our results page and if you'd like to check out the action, you can view a selection of the pics in the gallery. Many thanks to everyone involved again, and I look forward to seeing you all on the beach soon!
