Endless Summer Swim

The ‘Gyllyngvase SLSC Endless Summer Swim’ is held on the final Sunday of the Lifeguard season in September, based at Gyllyngvase Beach, Falmouth. The course is roughly 800m’s (3 Buoys) for adults and 500m’s (1 Buoy) for nippers.

Each entrant is required to raise a minimum of £5 sponsorship to take part. It’s been a fantastic event for the past 3 years and the club looks forward to seeing you there in 2011!

The 2010 Event

Another fantastic event… the 3rd Endless Summer Swim 2010 held its biggest field yet. Almost 100 swimmers, aged between 7 and 70 took to the cool waters of the English Channel. Thank you all for taking part in a great fund-raiser for the club. Thanks also to those who helped out with safety cover and registration on the day. We raised almost £1000! I hope to see you all again next year.

The 2009 Event

It must be something in the name! Like last years race, the 2009 Endless Summer Swim truly was the last day of the summer. Almost 100 swimmers aged 6-60 met at the beach on a perfect Sunday morning. The event in 2008 was meant to be a fund-raiser, to get the club off the ground. Only a handful of locals took part and I couldn’t have imagined how much the club and the race could grow in only 12 months time. Thanks to everyone involved for their dedication and support throughout, without you all we wouldn’t be here!

The sea was calm, not even a ripple could be seen as the younger Nippers took to the start line. With the Gylly Buoy their target, armed with boards, goggles and smiles the whistle blew. There was a fast dash into the water, and a summer of training on the beach clearly showed. The first board out was Cameron Hopkins, with Holly Stonehouse and Kae Cornish on his tail. In the swim race, Emily Beccansall glided through the cool waters in 1st place. A strong swim by Theo Flemming saw him take 2nd with Daniel Johnson in 3rd.

Soon after the 10-13 aged Nippers lined up with a 250m Buoy staring at them from what looked like half way to France! 11 swimmers, all determined to succeed. Before you could say ‘Gyllyngvase’, Courtney-Lee Reid emerged from the water to retain her title from last year. Harriet Lord ran past the line shortly after in 2nd with Izzy Steele in 3rd.

An endless summer september day at Gyllyngvase Beach near Falmouth. A beautiful cloudless day, cool clear waters which were almost as calm as a pool, and a clearly marked 800m swim course. Yours truly was there to make the most of what could be the last summer day. Roll on next year. Max, Tri Cornwall.

At 12pm a strong field of 51 lined up with an 800m swim course in their view. Some young, some not so young. Some relishing the idea, some with shaky legs. All finishing, what turned out to be a great event. Rescue Boards at the ready, the countdown began. ‘Ready, Set, Long Pause, Siren!’. From my viewpoint on the RNLI IRB there was a clear separation from those looking to see gold and those looking to conquer the course. A front group quickly appeared with Matt Trewellar leading from start to finish. At only 14 years of age, who knows how far he can go in the future? He stormed to victory, winning the Junior age category. The 1st placed adult was Adam Trexler, who only heard about the race bumping into a hunky Gylly lifeguard the day before on the beach! Next out of the water was Nick Deards (2nd adult) closely followed by Matt Dunsbler (3rd adult). Not too far behind was Nikki Russell taking 2nd place in the Junior field with Sam Steele swimming well in 3rd.

I have to give a special mention to our local swimmer Roma, who took home the Seagull trophy for raising a fantastic £145.50.

Together with race sponsorships, face painting, cake sales and welcome donations, we raised an amazing £860 on the day! After a lot or organization, it all seems worth it now. Many thanks to all those who took part, particularly the marshals and safety cover. I hope to see you all again next year!
