Club captain, Melissa has been crowned the European Paratriathlon Champion, claiming gold in Alanya, Turkey this weekend. Melissa and her guide, Nicole Walters, beat the reigning European Champion and fellow GBR athlete Charlotte Ellis, and current World Champion Susana Rodriguez (ESP), to cross the line with a minute lead.
Also racing for GBR was Matthew Casey, who competed in the u19 Male Age-Group Race. Matthew finished in 9th place in his first international race. Well done Matt!
Following a great second place finish at the World Championships in New Zealand’s Auckland last year, Melissa has been training hard in the run up to the European Championships.
“It was a difficult race in temperatures over 30 degrees. We had a really good swim exiting the water first and were able to maintain that lead on the bike and run. All the training throughout the winter in Cornwall has paid off. I can’t believe I’m now European Champion, it feels amazing!”
“I couldn’t have done it without my coach, Allan, who came out to Alanya to support me. Thanks as well to everyone from Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving + Triathlon Club in Falmouth for your encouragement, as well as my sponsors Blue Seventy, Saucony, Matrix/Tank Cycles, Oliver Hughes Physiotherapy, At Your Pace and Cycle Logic.”
Melissa, who is an ambassador for the Cornwall Sports Partnership, has had a very successful career so far despite only being involved in the sport for a short period, and is starting to dominate on an international stage. Paratriathlon is appearing for the first time in the 2016 Paralympic games in Rio de Janeiro where Melissa has her goals fixed on continuing with her winning ways.
