Gyllyngvase SLSC once again made the trip up to the Cardiff International Pool to enter the National Surf Life Saving Stillwater Championships.

Both nippers and juniors were competing over the weekend, and as always, we performed amazingly and showed some superb team spirit. Team coaches Matt Trebilcock and Will Parkinson were overjoyed with the dedication and effort by all competitors and the results are now in. The nipper team finished an excellent 8th, winning 3 gold, 13 silver and one bronze medals. It’s not all about the winning though, as all nippers contributed to the success of the team. We were the fourth highest placed Cornish club, which is a super achievement. The juniors also performed well, finishing in 18th position, despite having the smallest team on the day.

‘Huge congratulations to all the Nippers and Juniors who competed for Gylly in Cardiff last weekend. You all did yourselves and your club proud! As always, it is a pleasure to be a member of Gylly SLSC when we have a group of nippers and juniors who perform at the levels that they all did this weekend and more importantly the enjoyment and team spirit that they had whilst doing it. Thanks to all the parents and especially all our helpers that made it such a great weekend for all of us.’

Matthew Trebilcock, Nipper Coach

‘I would like to say well done to all the juniors, you were fantastic in the water and we had comments on your polite well-mannered behaviour! Big thank you to you all for doing the club proud! And thank you to all the parents that helped out on the day.’

Will Parkinson, Gear Steward (Stand-in Junior Team Manager)

SILVER FOR MELISSA AND ALICE AT THE EUROPEAN PARA-TRIATHLON CHAMPS

Melissa Reid and her guide Alice Nicholas competed on 22nd April in Eliat, Israel in the European Triathlon Championships. This was only the second international outing for visually impaired Melissa, and the duo secured the silver medal position. They came close to gold too, loosing their lead in the final straight to the reigning world champion.

Photo: British Triathlon/www.ZalemOti.com

This race is following Melissa’s previous success last year, finishing second at the World Championships in Hyde Park (her very first race in the sport). Since being selected onto the Great Britain Para-Triathlon Team, she is now focusing her sights on the British Championships next month and the 2012 World Championships in Aukland, New Zealand later this year.

The pair could only compete due to the amazing support of Cycle Logic of Helston, who stepped in at the last minute and supplied an excellent tandem to race on. This was an adapted Dawes touring tandem and although not the custom-race bike that the other teams were competing on, still allowed Melissa and Alice to secure the fasted bike split in the race, taking off 6 minutes from Hyde Park. Melissa is also grateful to her dad and coach, Allan Reid and the support of everyone at Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving and Triathlon Club.

While in Eliat the pair had the chance to meet up with fellow Cornish Athlete Mark Lewarne from Redruth, Great Britain age group captain and competitor for some final training preparations. Melissa, Alice and Mark (5th in age group) have secured places to compete in the World Championships.

On return from the European Championships Melissa is now trying to secure a sponsor to enable her to get to Aukland. There is currently no funding available to the athlete through British Triathlon and as a part-time swimming teacher, Melissa can’t afford the trip without help. She has seen recent support from Pendennis Shipyard, Falmouth School, Skinners Brewery and Perranporth SLSC, but still needs a headline sponsor for the 2012 season.

Melissa Says:

‘It was a very tough race in +35 degrees temperatures. In the end the heat got to me, but I’ll learn from this and I’m aiming for one better at the British and World Champs. I can’t travel without financial support though, and if you or your business would be interested in supporting me please get in touch. With your help I can achieve my goals, make a global name for your company and do Cornwall proud.’

Melissa can be followed on Twitter @reidmelissa or visit www.melissareid.org.uk for up-to-date news.

As we are always looking for helpers and coaches, I am proposing to hold a helpers/future coaches training day on Saturday 28 April 2012 at 10:00 on Gylly beach, to run through all the relevant disciplines and what our coaching aims are. Please come prepared to have a go, so running shoes at the ready and wetsuits on!!

If you are interested in helping out on the beach providing water cover, or wish to take a more active part in the coaching, then please register your interest at the registration desk at the last pool session, or let me know on 07801 580106.

Finally, my one top tip for a great beach experience is having a good wetsuit, as being cold will mean that all enjoyment will be lost.

I cannot stress how important a good quality and well fitting wetsuit is for the enjoyment of the beach and water activities.

For your information, we have arranged with Sessions surf shop in Falmouth that they will give 10% off all wetsuit purchases if you mention you are a member of Gylly SLSC (so wear your hoodies), and they also operate a part exchange service. Obviously, other wetsuit and surf shops are available if required!

The event calendar is now brimming with the entire running, surf life saving and multi-sports events that are appearing in the South West in 2012. With the Olympics just around the corner, the sport of triathlon is going from strength to strength, and there have been a number of new races added to the calendar this year. Road running and surf life saving events are also available to be placed in your diary. Here’s my pick of the bunch.

SLSGB Pool Champs at Cardiff (21st April Nipper / 22nd April Youth) Get training all, as this event will come around quick.

Falmouth Half Marathon (Sunday March 18th) – A new event coming to Falmouth this year in support of Cornwall Hospice Care, and only 13.1 miles!

Helston Triathlon (Sunday 27th May) – New to the sport? This is the perfect race for you and is the fourth event in the Cornwall Triathlon Series.

Jubilee Pool Aquathlon Series (Saturday 2nd June, Wednesday 2nd June, Wednesday 25th July, Wesdesday 29th August) – Swim the pool, run the Prom. The Jubilee Pool Aquathlons are a great way to get introduced into multi-sport racing. With the competitors times often being split by seconds, these events really make sure the transition is a key part of your race.

Castle to Castle Swim (Sunday 3rd June) – Raising money for the RNLI, this tough sea swim is a noted fixture for all open water swimmers. The club plays a key role in the water cover too…

Falmouth Triathlon (Sunday 17th June) – Carrick Leisure is partnering with Gylly SLSC to put on the town’s first Triathlon. Part of the Cornwall Triathlon Series, this event is a must for all members willing to give it a ‘tri’. If you’re not racing, water cover help will be much appreciated.

Summer Turkey Trott, 4 mile race (Wednesday 11th July) – This fast paced dash around Redruth is a good introduction to road running. Get your entries in quick though, as it sells out fast. There’s usually a hog roast for after race socializing.

Trident Challenge, Saturday 4th August – Falmouth Fire Station host the annual 800m Open Water Swim race. A great event for a good cause, supported by the club.

Gyllyngvase Junior and Relay Triathlon, 18th-19th August – There’s not just one Triathlon coming to Falmouth this year, there’s 3! Club chairman, Allan Reid, has been working closely with Falmouth Town Council to host these unique events in the South West. More details to follow in the next few weeks – but be sure to mark these races in your diary.

SLSGB Beach Champs at Portreath (25-26th August – Masters / 28-29th – Youth / 31st Aug – 1st Sep – Nippers / 8-9th Sep – Senior) Go Gylly go!

Awesome Foursome Quadrathlon, Saturday 8th September – I raced this event last year and highly recommend it. It is a perfect cross of Surf Life Saving and Triathlon, with the canoe or ski added to the standard swim, bike and run. With 30% gradients, it’s not for the faint hearted but can be completed by teams as well as individuals. Get your application in early.

Endless Summer Swim, 30th September – Our annual swim falling on the final day of the lifeguard season. Great fun, great people, great event.

Cornish Marathon, Sunday 18th November – Maybe 2012 is the year you complete your first marathon? Beat the crowds of London and enter the Cornish Marathon! Being one of the country’s hardest (15 miles up hill) shouldn’t put you off as you get to run with some of the best views in any race I’ve encountered. With all of the view gazing, it’s over before you know it.

Falmouth Mob Match, Sunday 25th November – A 6 mile run around Swanpool and the Castle. Lets get a team in this year.

If you enter a race, please send a report and images to matt@gyllysurf.org.uk and I will feature you on this site (and probably write a press release too). If I’ve missed an event on the calendar, let me know too.

Have a great 2012 with Gylly!
