On 1st January 2013, swimmers young and old entered the icy waters off Falmouth’s Gyllyngvase Beach to bring in the new year. There was one rule, no wetsuits. The event has been running for 5 years and was first established by Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving + Triathlon Club with only a handful of people entering the water. The 2013 event was the biggest yet with over 100 hardy swimmers taking part. There is no financial benefit, just a great way for the whole community to get together and celebrate the new year. A small wave on the day enabled everyone to enjoy the occasion, showing off their body surfing skills in front of a large crowd on the beach. The majority came out within 5 minutes but some lasted almost half an our in the 9 degrees water. Most importantly the sun was shining, helping everyone to get warm once the challenge was over.
“It was a great social event to start the new year and the club will be hosting plenty more challenges throughout 2013.”
Melissa Reid, club Captain.
