24/01/10 Chatherine's Swim – New

Gylly parent and supporting member, Catherine Ralph is currently in training to swim the Chanel as a relay team in July 2010. The team consists of 5 colleagues who work at Treliske Hospital in Truro. The weather hasn't been too favoursome to their training schedule, nonetheless they are all training hard for this extreme challenge. Catherine is hoping to gain some sponsorship for her chosen charity and will donate to the local initiatives of the RNLI.ms

07/01/10 New Years Day, Iceberg Challenge

On 1st January 2010, a large bunch of hardy Gylly clubbies put on their bathers and entered the freezing (no exaggeration) waters of the English Channel. Why…? I'm not too sure, I guess you can call it tradition or madness, or a bit of both. It certainly cured Mr King's hangover anyway! The record was smashed this year with a lead group of 5 staying in the sea for an incredible 29 minutes! This was possibly helped by the summer-like weather we were lucky to encounter on the day and also the small wave to keep our wits about us. On what was a very busy day on the best beach in Falmouth we can be proud to be members of such a great club! Thanks to Mrs Emsden for keeping the times, although, I would like to see you in the sea next year!ms

06/01/10 2010 is here!

Hi all, happy 2010! I hope you all enjoyed your break from training, I certainly did - although I managed to get a couple of swim sessions in! We are planning to be back to our normal winter training schedule from this saturday 9th Jan. I've just been looking at the BBC weather forecast and they are predicting some heavy snow showers this weekend. This may lead to us having to cancel the swim session on Saturday evening. I'll post on this site as soon as I have any info on this (more than likely on Saturday morning itself). Anyway, I hope to see everyone back in training soon.ms

29/09/09 Gylly Shines At Mounts Bay

Team Gylly SLSC had great success last weekend, at the final Mounts Bay Jubilee Aquathlon race. There have been 5 races in total, comprising of a 200m swim in the pool followed by a 2 mile run along the promonade. The competitors top 3 times counted to create an overall series winner. On the day Emily won the Female race with Melissa Reid in 3rd place. Nikki Russell came 1st in the Female Junior category and Allan was 2 seconds off his PB, placing 3rd in the Male race.

Emily had a number of strong races throughout the year, and it showed when she took the overall Female title. Nikki was an amazing 4th and Melissa (the only Gylly entrant to complete all 5 races) in 7th.

The overall series was won by Neil Eddy of Mounts Bay in the male category, closely followed by our very own Dave Bartlett in 2nd. Allan took 5th with Matt just behind him in 6th place.

Well done to everyone who took part, and I'm sure we'll have even more competitors there next year.ms

28/09/09 Endless Summer Swim 09

Endless Summer Swim 09 Results>>>

It must be something in the name! Like last years race, the 2009 Endless Summer Swim truly was the last day of the summer. Almost 100 swimmers aged 6-60 met at the beach on a perfect Sunday morning. The event in 2008 was meant to be a fund-raiser, to get the club off the ground. Only a handful of locals took part and I couldn't have imagined how much the club and the race could grow in only 12 months time. Thanks to everyone involved for their dedication and support throughout, without you all we wouldn't be here!

The sea was calm, not even a ripple could be seen as the younger Nippers took to the start line. With the Gylly Buoy their target, armed with boards, goggles and smiles the whistle blew. There was a fast dash into the water, and a summer of training on the beach clearly showed. The first board out was Cameron Hopkins, with Holly Stonehouse and Kae Cornish on his tail. In the swim race, Emily Beccansall glided through the cool waters in 1st place. A strong swim by Theo Flemming saw him take 2nd with Daniel Johnson in 3rd.

Soon after the 10-13 aged Nippers lined up with a 250m Buoy staring at them from what looked like half way to France! 11 swimmers, all determined to succeed. Before you could say 'Gyllyngvase', Courtney-Lee Reid emerged from the water to retain her title from last year. Harriet Lord ran past the line shortly after in 2nd with Izzy Steele in 3rd.

At 12pm a strong field of 51 lined up with an 800m swim course in their view. Some young, some not so young. Some relishing the idea, some with shaky legs. All finishing, what turned out to be a great event. Rescue Boards at the ready, the countdown began. 'Ready, Set, Long Pause, Siren!'. From my viewpoint on the RNLI IRB there was a clear separation from those looking to see gold and those looking to conquer the course. A front group quickly appeared with Matt Trewellar leading from start to finish. At only 14 years of age, who knows how far he can go in the future? He stormed to victory, winning the Junior age category. The 1st placed adult was Adam Trexler, who only heard about the race bumping into a hunky Gylly lifeguard the day before on the beach! Next out of the water was Nick Deards (2nd adult) closely followed by Matt Dunsbler (3rd adult). Not too far behind was Nikki Russell taking 2nd place in the Junior field with Sam Steele swimming well in 3rd.

I have to give a special mention to our local swimmer Roma, who took home the Seagull trophy for raising a fantastic £145.50.

Together with race sponsorships, face painting, cake sales and welcome donations, we raised an amazing £860 on the day! After a lot or organization, it all seems worth it now. Many thanks to all those who took part, particularly the marshals and safety cover. I hope to see you all again next year!ms
