Perranporth Youth Aquathon

One week on from a very successful British Life Saving Sport Surf Championships, a team of 9 members from Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving + Triathlon Club travelled over to Perranporth on Saturday 8th September to compete in the annual Perranporth Aquathon Youth Challenge for ages 8 through to 16.

The conditions that greeted the competitors could not have been better, with glorious sunshine and a nice 2-3 foot swell, which meant that the competitors would be treated to a proper sea swim.

With the course set, the competitors were split into 2 age ranges, with the 8 to 10 year olds competing over an approx 400 metre sea swim followed by a 2km run over the soft sand. The 11 to 16 year olds competed over the same swim course, but were treated to a longer run of approx 3km.

56 competitors in the 8 to 10 year olds categories were away first, with the 3 Gylly members in this age range all towards the front of the pack and making very good progress on the swim leg. This was maintained on the run, with eventually all 3 team members finishing in the top 3 of their respective age categories. Thomas Trebilcock crossed the finish line 5thoverall, after a fantastic swim, and was the eventually the winner in the 9 year old boys category:

8-10 year old results:

Joseph Railton                2nd  –  8 year old boys

Thomas Trebilcock         1st   –   9 year old boys

Mikey Pond                      3rd   –   9 year old boys

After the strong performances from the 8 to 10 year olds the remaining 6 members of the team now had something to prove as they lined up as part of a 55 strong field and they did not fail to deliver. Once again the swim leg saw a number of the Gylly team towards the front with Abby Mundell, Rosie Boulton and Orion Page in particular producing great swim legs, which ended with both Abby and Rosie winning their respective age categories. With the run being longer than that of the 8 – 10 year olds, the strong runners from the team had a chance to shine, and in particular the run legs from Lowenna Hawkey and Matthew Casey really stood out and propelled them to 1st place finishes in their age categories.

11 – 16 year old results:

Rosie Boulton                      1st        –      11 year old girls

Amy Walker                         4th       –      11 year old girls

Abby Mundell                      1st        –      12 year old girls

Lowenna Hawkey               1st        –      15 year old girls

Orion Page                            2nd      –      15 year old boys

Matthew Casey                     1st       –      16 year old boys

“Well done to everyone who took part in this event, and thanks to Perranporth SLSC for organising it. Following the summer of sport in the UK, it is great to see local clubs encouraging children to take part in events like these, possibly creating the Cornish sporting stars of the future.” Matthew Stone, President, Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving + Triathlon Club
